FAQs about water and its benefits for exercise in the puppy and adult and for senior care
How is walking in the water different than on land?
Water has the property of resistance, meaning it takes much more effort to walk in water than on land. More energy output requires more physical endurance. We use this property to maintain and build strength and muscle.
What are some of the ways we exercise in an underwater treadmill?
There are many ways to exercise and have fun in an underwater treadmill. We can change the dynamics of the activity by altering the water height and the speed of movement. We can also incorporate other weight shifting activities and use different pieces of equipment to entertain and engage them both physically and mentally.
How does water benefit a senior pet?
Senior pets benefit from water exercises because of the property of buoyancy. This property allows the water to lift weight off of the muscles and joints to allow them to move and exercise more freely. Senior dogs also benefit from hanging traction and buoyancy to stretch and relax tense, painful joints.
But my dog doesn’t like water.
Often even though your dog doesn’t like water or doesn’t like swimming, they are comfortable in the underwater treadmill because their feet can still touch the ground. We take early steps to make their first experience in the underwater treadmill comfortable and fun for them so the next time they are less fearful.
How can exerecising in the water increase conditioning?
Exercising in the water is not only using more energy which equals more calories being burnt, it also encourages the use of muscles groups that may not normally be used. The energy expenditure, the cardiovascular exercise, and the muscle targeting makes this a whole body exercise. (including mental stimulation)
How often can my dog exercise in an underwater treadmill?
Often incorporating a good home or on-site exercise program that includes strength and balance challenges coupled with hydro-aerobics can achieve full body strengthening, conditioning and help maintain muscle in all ages but especially our seniors.
